A Day in the Life of the Operations Team Powering Boston’s Biotech Companies

9:00 AM — Cryotanks and Compliance - Fueled by Espresso

Our team has a tough time choosing between coffee sources, with espresso and cold brew on tap available for free in our kitchen or an expertly crafted latte from Triangle Coffee in the lobby of our building.

Fueled for the day, we head to the lab where cryotanks' levels are checked and filled, and all shared laboratory space and private laboratory suites are prepared for resident researchers. Our Lab Technician and Director of Operations work closely to manage these essential tasks with accuracy, ensuring every bench and BSL-2 suite is ready for the day.

Triangle Cafe - a great way to start the day on the first floor of 100 Chestnut Street features a rotating artist exhibit from local artists.

10:00 AM — Facility Monitoring & De-icing

Our team monitors the Elemental Machines dashboards and reviews alerts for all fridges, freezers, and incubators across the facility. Regular de-icing of cold storage is performed to maintain proper seals and long-term temperature stability.

Nicole, Lab Technician at Hatch.Bio Labs, refills cryotanks in the freezer farm.

11:00 AM — Resident Support & Lab Operations

Residents file in, new residents are onboarded, deliveries are organized, and requests involving cryogenic storage, waste disposal, or shared equipment are handled quickly. Anna, our Community Coordinator, maintains communication across all teams and keeps daily movement organized. Our lab technician handles the biological and chemical waste that accumulates and sorts it in the designated waste streams.

Anna coordinates deliveries, checks in visitors, and meets with vendors.

12:00 AM — Vendor Coordination & Logistics

Joy, our Director of Operations, oversees all site logistics to ensure dependable, compliant lab space for growing life sciences teams. Around this time of day, she’s ensuring equipment service vendors, waste management partners, gas suppliers, and procurement channels are managed to maintain uninterrupted operations. Anna coordinates with TJ from ZTech to help set up a new resident company with Single Sign On to the Hatch.Bio Labs app.

Joy makes sure maintenance is sheduled proactively, and permitting is up to date.

1:00 PM — Weekly Events & Community Planning

The operations and community teams meet for a weekly events sync to plan upcoming founder lunches, technical workshops, networking events, and vendor demos. This time we’re planning our holiday festivities.

A recent lunch and learn with SciShield at Hatch.Bio Labs. Residents learned about how to use the complimentary chemical tracker.

2:30 PM — Shared Equipment Checks + Custom Changes

The team completes afternoon rounds across shared resources. This time, Nicole, our Lab Tech is working on calibrations. Occasionally, our friends from Lab Movers come onsite to help move some lab benches to storage to make way for a new company’s lab equipment.

Nicole works on calibration in the lab.

4:00 PM - 6:00 PM — End-of-Day Reset

Team members do a walkthrough of the lab spaces, check Elemental Machines, and check the loading dock for last-minute deliveries so everything is left in a good place for the evening as residents wrap things up for the night.
